Looking for the Heroes

By Jackie Morin, soprano

"What black despairs go unconfined!

We speak with the lip, and we dream in the soul,

of some better and fairer day."

You turn on the news, only to turn it off minutes later out of pure disgust and frustration - hate crimes, school shootings and turmoil on the political stage.  I could certainly bury my head and ignore the world around me, but instead, I have found myself looking for the heroes in these tragic stories, how communities come together to support one another and hold on to the notion that there are still good people in this world.

Jackie Morin, soprano

My father served in the Army during the Vietnam War and my fiancé served seven years in the Air Force.  I am constantly appalled that our veterans do not receive the respect, care (mental and physical) and support that they deserve when they return home.  Veteran Dale Beatty lost his legs while serving in Iraq.  His community thanked him for his service by building him an accessible home.  To pay it forward, he co-founded Purple Heart Homes, which helps build or modify homes for disabled U.S. veterans.  Why would this man who already gave so much of himself do such a thing?  "We wouldn't leave someone behind on the battlefield, why would we do it at home?" was Beatty's reply.

There are many scales on which to make a difference.  The important thing is to take that leap of faith and the actions necessary to make a difference.
